untitled nights
at night we tread softly towards the river
where we undress.
everything is slow motion in the silver light
of one million diamonds
that glow overhead, and our bodies are feathered
dove’s wings.
we float together into the grass that stands tall
thick like a forest,
and lay with our backs to the sky, our arms and legs entangled.
the sounds of night echo
in our hearts, smooth but sharp. continuous but broken.
birds and crickets and other wild things.
we can close our eyes, encompassed in dark, and still see each other’s face.
smiling and sighing.
our teeth are white pearls, the kind you see around a mermaid’s neck.
living the correct way i wanna be a high class hippie
with pot brownies and joint-stashed lips.
we can run around the dingy town
painting our faces rainbow and
letting our hair grow out long
with flower crowns and weeded braids.
i want to be carefree and still look good.
in our own eyes we’ll be the only ones
to look at.
we’ll be cool without even trying.
we’ll be barefoot in grassy places
where patches of dirt will cool our toes
in the freckling sunlight.
i want to have rosy cheeks and toothy
smiles that i send your way
and you send back ocean-eyed grins
with red popsicle lips.
i just wanna hold your hand.
i wanna sleep on a mattre
vacate you took my hand

and pressed it to my chest,

made me toss my heart

over the edge of the roof,

and said

‘sometimes you need to take a break from this.’
