alarm clock paradox.
you stripped your sweater to
show me your freckles,
and oh how i'd love to peel them off,
because you're no swan, lovely--
not with those small brown accidents
kissing your every inch of
sympathetic skin
when they should be
kissing every inch of mine.

the stars
formed a coalition
to sign a petition
to ban you from
the sky, but i
thoroughly object;
what else could i wish on?

when you're alone, you'll always
lust for the bedroom door
to lock you in forevermore,
to lock me out forevermore;
that way you're safe to be the

the ghostling in the mirror.
you're still just one
of those dirty little

forget the ocean, you've never been there
your feet don't know the difference between
sand-papered wooden floors and ocean scattered sandscapes.

forget canyons cause you've never seen one
the only edge you know is self-imposed,
or is the tip top of the stairs.

forget the stars cause you've never reached them
you only believe in their fantasies and
admire them from a distance.

forget the moon, you've never landed on it
left a footprint in its crater, or
taken a glowing rock back with you.

forget history, cause you haven't seen it
you only know it,
just read about it in books.

forget time, it's invisible

happiness is

your back porch covered in little
dixi cups that are full of rain water.
it's running to your car in a blizzard
and getting snow flakes in your eyes.
it's clapping your hands so long
that they tingle,
and watching a movie so late at night
your eyes can't stay open.

happiness is

a letter with a bluebird stamp.
cold bed sheets in the summer.
a violin solo in a symphony.
and a drive down a small one-way street,
even when you should be going the other way.

i trace the lines on
the palms of my hands,
wondering. too often,
